Howard University Announces Legendary Actress, Alumna Phylicia Rashad As Dean Of The College of Fine Arts

WASHINGTON – Following a comprehensive national search, Howard University today proudly announces the appointment of Phylicia Rashad as dean of the recently reestablished College of Fine Arts, effective July 1, 2021. In this role, she will report to Provost Anthony K. Wutoh. An alumna of Howard University, Rashad graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor’s in fine arts. Having the opportunity to see, interact, and learn from thriving African-Americans will serve as a source of inspiration in the pursuit of greatness. 

Blacks and Hispanics are underrepresented in science, technology, engineering and math careers. OmniQuest Youth Empowerment Initiative, Inc, a Washington, DC capacity building non-profit organization, is working to change that narrative by bringing together professionals making significant contributions to the field. Medical, engineering, and cybersecurity professionals will share insight into the various STEM career paths available as well as some ways to prepare while in middle and high school.

Gates Scholar Winner Akayla Brown is Bringing Her Talents to Howard University

Akayla Brown, the 18-year-old, highly sought after Bodie High School senior, went viral after receiving a prestigious scholarship from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. A Southwest Philadelphia original, Brown applied to more than 25 universities, including several HBCUs and Ivy League schools. CBS executive Kimberly Godwin has been named the next president of ABC News, becoming the first Black woman to lead a major broadcast news network.

OmniQuest Youth Empowerment Initiative, Inc, a Washington, DC capacity building non-profit organization, is proud to present our monthly Black Voices Series featuring professional Storyboard Artist, Timing Director and Animator, Aaron Brewer. 

Born and raised in the DMV and a graduate of the School of Visual Arts, Aaron worked as an animator for a decade in NYC before packing up his things and moving to Los Angeles. As a traditional 2D artist, he has contributed to a wide variety of projects including children’s and adult animated series, commercials, and music videos. Aaron’s talents extend beyond animation to storyboarding and animation direction (sheet timing). His works include but are not limited to Nickelodeon’s Transformers and Rugrats; Santiago Of The Sea, Wonder Pet’s and Little Big Awesome.

Aaron will provide animation drawing tips and a demonstration of drawing demos to help the audience understand the process of making an animated show!

Perfect opportunity for your little one to unleash their inner creativity. As we celebrate the beginning of spring, we’ll have a lively discussion about dreaming BIG. While painting the quote “A winner is a dreamer who never gives up,” students will be instructed by Master Artist Carmen Jenkins Frazier on proper paint techniques. There will also be a discussion of Nelson Mandela along with other notable winners.

This event is best suited for youth in grades 3 through 6. We’ll provide the fun while you’ll provide a kid-friendly drink.

The Five Brothers are stopping by to drop some knowledge on the various paths they took to ultimately become successful first-generation doctors, lawyers, and judges. Among other things, they’ve overcome homelessness, police brutality, and social injustices to stand in their rightful place as a King in these United States of America. Everyday, they are working hard to pave the way for the future leaders of the African-American community.
